Beatnik

僕は基本的に日本人の作家を読むんですが、
例外が少しあり、その作家の一人がJack Kerouac。
彼との出会いは尊敬する先輩に薦められて8年前くらいに読んでみた。


とりあえず彼の説明から。
彼はアメリカ文学のビートジェネレーションという時代の作家で、
第二次世界大戦後、
みんなが信じ追い求めたアメリカンドリームを
真っ向から"幸せではない"とアンチテーゼ打ち立てた男前さんです。

僕が住んでいた街、ＮＹCは彼とゆかりがあります。
ある日、市立図書館で彼の代表的作品「路上」の展示会がありました。
とても素晴らしく、いい意味で変態でした。
いつも良くしてくれる３６歳のボヘミアンな女性に誘われて行ってきたのですが、
その彼女がケルアックのタイピングしたある紙の一行目を見て笑い、
「あんたこれ読みなさい」って言われた。

「ぼくは大人になることを断固として拒否をする。」

彼女は、「あなたそのものねｗ」と笑っていた。

ここまで読んだあなたは、
「なーんだ、ピーターパン症候群の作家か。
お前は遊学していたし、自己弁護、傷の舐め合いちゃうんか？」と、
思っているかと思いますが、
半分正解、半分不正解ですｗ
なぜかと言うとこのビートの作家たちは後世に多大な影響を及ぼしました。
同時代、５０年代にはアートではジャクソン・ポロックが
抽象表現をアクションペインティングで作り上げ、
音楽ではチャーリ・パーカーがモダンジャズの原型を作り上げました。
なかでもロックに対しての影響が大きく、
ボブディランはビートの思想を受け継いだ一人です。

時代の過渡期であった５０年代。
既成概念にとらわれず新しいものを作り上げた人たちが登場した５０年代。
この波はその後も広がり、
６０年代にはヒッピー、ポップアートが一時代を築きました。
現代まで続く反体制・脱規範のサブカルチャー、
本流に反抗するライフスタイルは
ビート・ジェネレーションがから始まったといっても過言ではないと思います。

では、その他のビートの代表的作家たち紹介します。

「裸のランチ」が代表作のウィリアム・バロウズ。
奥さんをウィリアム・テルごっこで間違えて殺してしまったとんでもないジャンキー野郎。
ガス・ヴァンサントの「ドラッグストア・カウボーイ」に
ウィリアム・バロウズが出演しているので見てみてください。
最高のドラッグムービーです。

「吠える」の詩集が代表作のアレン・ギンズバーグ。
マリファナの合法化や反戦運動、仏教観を愛する平和野郎。
そして、ジャック・ケルアック。

彼らの共通点は
酒・ドラッグ・旅が好き、
性に対して好奇心旺盛（上記の二人がバイセクシュアル。一人はホモセクシュアル）、
仏教をいち早くアメリカに持ち込み、人間の真理・生きる価値を追求。
既成概念や固定観念にとらわれずに、
新しいものや本流ではないものを否定しない素晴らしいやつらだと思います。
彼らの生き方を肯定はしませんが、彼らのような感覚を持ち続けたいと思います。
あなたが好きなものが意外とビートの影響を受けているものかもしれませんよ！！

I usually read only Japanese books, but there is exceptions. One them is Jack Kerouac. He was recommended by my senior at a college.

About him, he is an author representing "Beat generation". After WW2, the people of Beat generation insist " The happiness you believe is fake such as a house with a back yard, a car, a TV and shopping on weekends..." which was a typical happiness for Americans and it was the American dream.

The city I live, NYC is related to him. One day, I went to the exbition of "On The Road" at New York City Library with my 36 year old bohemian friend, and she pointed at a sentence which was saying... "I absolutely refuse to be an adult" She laughed and said "It's just like you"


You now think that Jack Kerouac is like Peter Pan. I slacked off in NY and I want to defend yourself?!? The answer is yes and no. lol Because Beatnik writers influenced the later culture a lot!! In 50's, Jackson Pollack
invented Action painting to describe　Abstract expressionism. Charlie Parker created a bas of modern Jazz. Especially Rock was inspired by Beatnik and Bob Dylan is one of the Beatnik Rock artists. 50's is a transit of a period and many creaters who are outside the box appeared. This cultual wave also expanded in 60's. It caused Hippie and Pop art. It's thought that anti-authority and out-law underground culture which is against the main
stream and the typical life style started from Beat generation.

I will introduce some beatnik writers.

William Burroughs "Naked Lunch"
He shot his wife while he was playing "William Tell" with her. He is in "Drug Store Cowboy" by Gus Van Sant. It's one of the best drug movies.

Allen Ginsberg "Howl"
He insisted ligalization of marijuana and anti war. He loved Buddhism.

The stuff in common by them is alcohol, drugs, travels and curiosity of sex(the above 2 guys were bi-sexual and the rest was gay). They first brought the idea of Buddhism into the US and seeked the meaning of life. They didn't care about
stereotypes and prejudice. They didn't deny black sheep. I can't follow the way they lived, but I want to have the sense and ideas like they had. The things you like may be influenced by "Beatnik"!!
